Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups basmati rice
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cinnamon stick, 2 in
  • 2 green cardamom pods
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 2 tablespoons cumin seed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2.5 cups water
  • small onion, thinly sliced

Directions

Soak rice in water for 20 minutes.
Heat oil, add stick, pods, cloves, and seed. Cook and stir for one minutes. Saute onion for about 10 minutes. Drain rice and add to pot. Add salt and water to pot and bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for about 15 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes.
